Are you new to U-Ravenna Co-op? If so, we recommend you start here. Through the next few pages, we briefly explain how our cooperative preschool works; how we use the preschool management system Jovial to help us better organize enrollment, tuition, and other essentials of our preschool; and how we use G Suite for Nonprofits for our email system, online document storage (through Shared Google Drives), calendar, and more.

How our Cooperative Preschool Works

Our preschool is under the umbrella of the North Seattle College. NSC supports our preschool through its cooperative preschool program, as well as through parent education classes.

University-Ravenna Cooperative Preschool : Under the umbrella of North Seattle College

The NSCCPP provides us with insurance and supports us through the Parent Advisory Council (PAC).

The insurance sets safety standards, like what our minimum adult-to-child ratio should be and how often we should wash our hands. These standards can be found in the Risk Management Manual.

The PAC is made up of parents from within each co-op preschool class who meet once a month to discuss program-wide topics. The PAC helps set standards across the NSCCPP, such as recommending new parental leave policies, and provides scholarships to ensure preschool is accessible to all.

Each class in a NSC cooperative preschool is actually viewed by the college as a parent education class. Our Parent Educators are the class teachers.

The monthly evening parent meetings are considered the class lecture, which is one of the reasons why attendance at this meeting is required and why the material has to be made up if you miss more than one parent meeting.

The daily preschool classes are considered the hands-on laboratory portions of the class. Your weekly work day is your weekly attendance in the laboratory.

Other perks from our arrangement with NSC include active participation in the management and operation of the nonprofit corporation (the business side of the preschool) and the benefits of being a NSC student.

When you take on one of our administrative jobs, you are helping to run our nonprofit corporation. Without your time and dedication to your job, our preschool wouldn’t be successful. Our families are the key to our success. We dedicate a portion of every monthly evening parent meeting to coming together to talk about preschool and class business, which is yet another reason why attendance at this meeting is required.

You can begin taking advantages of the benefits of being a NSC student as soon as you register for the parent education class through NSC. At the beginning of every quarter that you’re enrolled in our preschool, our Parent Educators will send instructions for how to register online. After you register, you can get a NSC student ID card that can be used for discounts in many places student discounts are offered. You can also take advantage of NSC student services.
